ABOUT
Born in 1961 in Takoradi, a Harbour town in Ghana, Artitude – Theodore Ayodele Sawyerr – spent his youth in Ghanaian cities like Kumasi, Koforidua, Accra. Though he went to schools that were to create paths to an incredible academic career, Ghana’s economic situation at that time made him leave school just when he was about to enter university. After leaving school he spent three years as a crew member on cargo vessels sailing around the world, and his home port was Rotterdam: an amazing experience that deeply formed his view on western lifestyle and made him appreciate the African Way of living.
Artitude’s detailed colourful paintings reflect the sacredness of men and nature and the interconnectedness of life and art. Born of a father who was a draughtsman, he grew up in a family of artists and was at an early age introduced to painting by his elder brother, who was for a long time his mentor. His explorations of various forms and colours of traditional Ghanaian life laid the foundation for a visual vocabulary he would tap into some years later.
Artitude grew into painting without formal training but after years working for various advertising companies – a work that influenced his stylistic repertoire and trained his ability to formal variety and abstraction.
He works with various materials, such as canvas, board, wood, and he uses oils, acrylics and pastels, among others. He evolved with his own crackle technique and uses the various options of 3D-materials. The texture on artwork, that is created through 3D-effects, adds depth, balance and contrast to his paintings, and it is intensified by bold deft strokes and audacious colours. With his distinctive mature and mint style, Artitude is a versatile and prolific artist.
His landscapes, paintings on African traditional life, abstracts, murals, and portraits are stylistic highlights with an earthy and natural feel.
As an artist with over 35 years of experience in art and painting, and with an uncountable number of paintings that were sold in major galleries and hotels or privately, it is important for him to continue to expand his range of topics and techniques and to work with new materials.
Artitude loves being surrounded by nature and absorbing its positive energy, as this gives him continuously the inspiration for his paintings.
In 2006 his work had been featured in a CAF-event on selecting the African footballer of the year. He was commissioned to paint portraits of the three short-listed footballers: Samuel Eto, Didier Drogba, and Michael Essien.
Artitude has exhibited a collection of his paintings on “The Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity” during the Black History Month 2021 in the American Embassy in Accra. His murals can be found at various venues and at temporary spaces like the COVID-Center in Accra.
